Shiloh Baptist Church in Elizabeth, New Jersey has played the lead role in the development of an affordable housing complex for seniors on a site adjacent to their local church. The triangular undeveloped site, borders the church, a high-rise apartment building, and the sunken right of way for the intercity train. A high-rise local detention facility is situated across the tracks. The project arrays an efficient but gracious apartment unit plan within a V-shaped 10-story apartment tower arranged to optimize views and is positioned so that no unit faces the tracks. Parking decks define the site’s western border. The tower is raised above the community center, which fronts on the internal plaza and is situated across from the church that sponsors activities within it. The fan-shaped area created is transformed into a landscaped outdoor plaza. The scheme includes 147 predominantly one-bedroom apartments, each with spacious day-lit open living spaces.
