MDA sought to create a family-centered space that maximized cooking as well as the storage and display of the family’s collection of 1940’s dinnerware. The existing layout was a planning challenge with large casement windows, each nearly 7 feet tall, and a desire to display a collection of over 1000 pieces of Fiestaware. The custom-designed open display shelves and tall custom glass upper cabinets showcase the dishware; a continuous zone of closed pantry storage and lower cabinets store food and cooking tools. A white cabinet finish was selected as a counterpart to the colorful dish collection. Only the ceiling, cornice, large French casement windows and herringbone flooring (a surprise unearthed under layers of sheet linoleum) remain. The new oven, cook top and pyramidal hood mark its position of the long since removed original hearth.
