Project Description

Port Authority – Multi-Use High Rise and Renovation
New York, NY  |  1998

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey requested proposals for one million square feet of commercial space to be constructed above the north wing of the existing Post Authority Bus Terminal on 42nd Street in NYC. Proposals were to include the complete renovation the terminal and a reconfiguration of retail spaces within the main concourse levels.

MDA designgroup, working with developer LCOR Inc., proposed a mix of retail and entertainment programs to be expanded and interspersed within the transportation functions of the bus station. The resulting 10-story podium forms the base of the new 20-story mixed-use office and hotel tower. The building’s form, derived from the integration of structure and surface with architectural signage and lighting, becomes the visual anchor to the revitalized West 42nd Street retail and entertainment corridor that links directly to Times Square.
